European Hosting Providers Compared: Hetzner, IONOS, and OVH

EU Alternativen Team·

Why European Hosting?

Those who store data on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud must reckon with US government access. The CLOUD Act obliges US companies to share data – even if the servers are in Europe.

The Three Major European Providers

Hetzner (Germany)

Hetzner is known for unbeatable price-performance and data centers in Nuremberg, Falkenstein, and Helsinki.

Strengths:

  • Lowest prices in the market
  • Dedicated and cloud servers
  • Excellent performance
  • Transparent company with German owners
Weaknesses:
  • Smaller service offering than AWS/Azure
  • Fewer geographic regions
Typical prices:
  • Cloud Server CX22: ~€4/month (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM)
  • Dedicated Server AX41: ~€40/month

IONOS (Germany)

IONOS (formerly 1&1) is one of the largest European hosting providers with a broad product portfolio.

Strengths:

  • Broad product portfolio (Shared, VPS, Dedicated, Cloud)
  • Good customer support
  • Own data centers in Germany
  • WordPress and Nextcloud hosting out of the box
Weaknesses:
  • Slightly higher prices than Hetzner
  • Watch out for automatic contract renewals

OVHcloud (France)

OVHcloud is Europe's largest cloud provider by capacity and offers a complete cloud infrastructure.

Strengths:

  • Largest European cloud offering
  • Data centers in many European countries
  • Managed Kubernetes, OpenStack
  • Affordable dedicated servers
Weaknesses:
  • Support can be slow
  • Less intuitive user interface

Direct Comparison

| Feature | Hetzner | IONOS | OVHcloud |

|---------|---------|-------|----------|

| Location | Germany | Germany | France |

| Cloud VPS | from €4 | from €1 | from €3.50 |

| Dedicated | from €40 | from €45 | from €39 |

| Managed Services | Limited | Yes | Yes |

Recommendation

  • Developers and startups: Hetzner (price-performance)
  • SMEs with managed services: IONOS
  • Enterprise: OVHcloud

Conclusion

European hosting providers are technically mature and often cheaper than AWS or Azure. For GDPR-compliant hosting, there is no excuse anymore for US cloud.
